5 Tricks to Help You Remember to Take Your Daily Supplements
Supplements can offer a huge boost to both your nutrition and your health. Unfortunately, these supplements don’t work if they’re just sitting in your medicine cabinet.
Some people seem naturally organized when it comes to daily tasks like this. For some of us, though, it’s a constant struggle to remember to take the recommended dose of vitamins or supplements, especially if it’s multiple times a day.
Here are five tricks to help you make sure your supplements actually end up in your body - so you can reap the benefits they offer.
Trick #1. Try habit stacking.
Habit stacking is the process of tacking a new habit that you want to form onto one that you already have. You probably don’t forget to turn off your alarm clock in the morning, brush your teeth, or make breakfast, so the trick is to add a new habit onto one you won't forget.
Pick one that makes sense to you, and write it down: “After I brush my hair, I will take my supplements.” It may take a few weeks of feeling awkward, but after a month or so the process will feel as automatic as picking up your hairbrush was before.
Trick #2. Make it easy for yourself.
Taking your supplements shouldn’t be a challenge. If you need to dig through a cabinet to find what you’re looking for behind bottles of lotion or expired medications, you’re drastically increasing the amount of willpower it takes to take your supplement regularly. Setting yourself up for success in advance helps to decrease decision fatigue.
Keep your supplements next to your bed with a glass of water so that you don’t even need to put your feet on the cold floor. Or if they have to be kept refrigerated, put them next to the coffee creamer you use every morning. Take them both out at once. The less thought your daily habit requires, the better.
Trick #3. Use a pill organizer.
Have some supplements that need to be taken multiple times a day, like Airloom? Need to take your supplements on the road? A pill organizer might be the right thing for you.
Since you fill these up weekly, it’s a quick visual reminder of whether or not you’ve already taken your supplements for the day. Some of them include AM and PM organizers for those multiple doses. And some are just ridiculously adorable. These aren’t the same pill organizers you remember from your grandma’s bathroom!
Trick #4. Set up a phone reminder
If you’re a digital native and wishing for something a little more integrated, consider setting up a daily reminder on your phone. You can set this up as a daily “appointment” in your Google or Outlook calendar, or just set a daily alarm to go off on your phone or computer.
You can also tweak this based on your schedule, so if you want to be reminded on weekdays before you leave for work, but later on weekends when you’d rather lounge in bed with a good book first, it’s easy to choose a schedule that works for your lifestyle. Just remember tip #1 and try to work it around some semblance of a regular schedule, or you’re more likely to forget.
Trick #5. Sticky notes
Of course, not everybody wants a high-tech solution. For plenty of people, the old fashioned sticky note is the way to go. Stick it on your bathroom mirror, your fridge, or even your door.
There’s nothing like a bright yellow “Did you take your supplements?” sticky note in your face to remind you that there’s something important to take care of before you leave the house. You can put it in your daily planner if that’s something you visit every day. Even just the act of writing it down at all can help you remember.
